You think you are OK but you learned in a clear heated pool. Now you’re exposed to an unfamiliar environment like an ocean rip current, or a fast moving muddy stream full of objects in a surprise flood.

I can tell you from all my travels I’ve observed this one fact:
90% of all adults inefficiently swim with their heads out of water to exhaustion.
By that I mean someone who has personal skills to correctly demonstrate all the strokes and water safety measures they are supposed to teach and be familiar with to prevent drowning. Heck, lifeguards who are the instructors, too, only have to swim 500 yards twice a week. I warm up 500 yards for my 2800 yard daily workout.
